It could be said that Tom Percival had an unconventional childhood in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. But you can just as easily rephrase that by saying that he grew up in a ramshackle and freezing-cold caravan with no electricity or heating. Whichever way you look at it, these formative years are almost certainly what first got him interested in writing and drawing. The first books that Tom ever loved were the Tim and the Hidden People series by Sheila McCullagh, which featured a magical cat called Tobias. It all seemed VERY real at night, in a draughty caravan, reading by gaslight in a howling gale.
After trying a few cities on for size, he decided that deep down he had always been a country boy and now he lives on the edge of Rodborough common in Gloucestershire with his girlfriend and their two young sons.
Tom has produced covers and internal illustrations for the Skulduggery Pleasant series of books, for the Chronicles of Egg series by Geoff Rodkey and Shiverton Hall by Emerald Fennell. He has illustrated titles by Anthony Horowitz, Pete Johnson, Alexadro Adornetto and a whole host of others.
Tom’s picture books to date, Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book, A Home for Mr Tipps, Jack’s AMAZING Shadow, Herman’s Letter, Bubble Trouble and Herman’s Holiday, will be followed by By The Light of the Moon in 2016 and Perfectly Norman in 2017, both published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books.
Tom’s first middle-grade series, Little Legends, co-created with Made in Me and written and illustrated by Tom, is published by Macmillan. He is currently working on more picture book, middle grade and YA projects.
