Walker pre-empts ‘epic’ middle-grade debut from Katharine Orton

DKW are delighted to announce that Walker Books are to publish Nevertell, the debut middle grade novel from Katharine Orton. Commissioning Editor Annalie Grainger acquired world rights in all languages in a pre-empt from Bryony Woods at Diamond Kahn & Woods. The book is set to publish in autumn 2019 in the UK. Walker US will publish the book in the USA, and other foreign rights territories will be sold at Frankfurt.

The book tells the story of eleven-year-old Lina. Born in a Soviet prison camp, Lina has never seen the world outside until the night she escapes with her best friend, Bogdan. As the pair journey across the snowy wilderness of Siberia, they encounter the kinds of magic that Lina thought could only exist in fairy tales. Pursued by a dangerous sorceress and her army of shadow wolves, Lina and Bogdan will need every ounce of bravery if they are to reach Moscow and freedom.

Commissioning Editor Annalie Grainger said:

“A dangerous sorceress, an army of shadow wolves, a brave and determined hero, and a gorgeous snowy setting – this book has it all! Young readers will adore the warmth, energy and adventure in Katharine’s terrific debut. From the very first page, I was swept up in her epic and wonderfully imaginative story of friendship, survival, sorcery and courage.”

Katharine Orton said:

“The opportunity this deal represents means everything to me. I’ve always admired the books Walker publish for, among other things, their beauty, integrity and attention to detail – so I was blown away that they wanted to publish mine. They really care about this story as much as I do.”

Bryony Woods said:

“Katharine Orton is a stunning debut talent and Nevertell is something truly special – a darkly magical adventure with real heart and a phenomenal setting. I couldn’t be happier that it’s found a home with the brilliant team at Walker.”

After gaining an English degree and an MA in creative writing, Katharine Orton worked for Barefoot Books in Bath before leaving to focus on her writing and her young family. She signed with DKW after taking part in the brilliant WoMentoring Scheme. She currently lives in Bristol.
